Abstraction: Methods and Materials
Featuring artworks by
Timothy Abel, Kristin Haas and John Kowalczyk

May 3rd through June 22nd

This exhibit was curated by Maureen Fritchen and features three emerging abstract artists who push their methods and materials using form, color and line to create work generally independent of recognizable visual references.  Exploring varied materials and experimental techniques, this colorful exhibit is sure to delight the eye as well as the mind.

Tim Abel's interests lie in exploring the dimensional potential of paper and tactile quality of sewing through creating process-based and site-responsive installations.

Kristin Haas creates objects out of recycled latex house paint. Her works communicate the physical, emotional and psychological language of painting, while referencing color, design and objecthood.

John Kowalczyk creates shrine-like, shiny, symmetrical figurations constructed of bits and pieces from vintage fabrics, gift wrap, shelf liner, string, ribbon, and repurposed drawings.

Returning to its original home on Monument Square in Downtown Racine, one of Wisconsin's oldest and most respected juried fine art fairs presents over 60 artists from around the country exhibiting works in a variety of media including painting, photography, jewelry, sculpture, ceramics and mixed media.  A convenient “Art Pick-Up” area will be available along Main Street where MSAF patrons may drive up to pick up artworks purchased during the Festival.

MSAF for Kids located along 5th Street and sponsored by SC Johnson, offers a variety of art-themed activities for kids of all ages including hands-on art activities from RAM on the Road, theatre warm-up exercises with the Racine Theatre Guild and the Racine Arts Council’s LINK Musical Petting Zoo.   Racine Unified School District will be displaying Student Art and creating interactive chalk drawings.

Live entertainment will be offered throughout the 2-day festival.  Scheduled performers include Mark Paffrath, Serita Cheeks, Matt Haeffel, Carol Christensen and the Belle City Brassworks, as well as special performances by Racine Unified School District student ensembles including the Starbuck Middle School Spartan Singers and The Real School Band.

A silent auction of fine art donated by the exhibiting artists will be offered each day with proceeds benefitting MSAF and The Racine Arts Council.  Art-fair enthusiasts of all ages are invited to visit our beautiful Downtown to experience a weekend celebration of the arts.
